Katherine Alteneder

Self-Represented Litigation Network
Washington, D.C.
With a deep background in legal aid, the courts and private practice, Katherine's philosophy throughout her career has been to build common sense, consumer oriented solutions by learning, innovating and sharing. An early member of SRLN, she has led the Self-Represented Litigation Network since August 2013, designing and implementing a sophisticated cloud based IT infrastructure to support future growth and analytics with minimal administrative overhead, overhauling and re-launching the SRLN webpage and on-line library, introducing geospatial analysis to the civil justice sector and expanding membership through a multi-faceted communications and educational strategy that promotes peer-to-peer collaboration. Katherine is particularly interested in building delivery systems for rural and vulnerable populations and creating community based legal assistance environments that prioritize judicial engagement and leadership to re-imagine services and approaches used by the private bar, legal aid and court staff to serve the public. Katherine views unbundled legal services as the connective tissue for this re-imagined system, and speaks widely on practical and ethical challenges of unbundling, drawing on her experiences in establishing the country's first Unbundle Section of a state bar and running a successful unbundled practice for five years. Katherine, a graduate of Northwestern University and Seattle University School of Law, resides in Virginia.
